In the Next 50 Years, Technology Will Change Our Lives

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic," said Arthur Clarke.

By 2046, nuclear fusion energy will have become established. By 2041, there will be a small city on the Moon. By 2036, we will have the first space elevator. By 2031, robots will be more intelligent than we are. By 2026, there will be boxing matches between androids. By 2021, yogurts will tell us jokes. By 2016, cars will drive themselves. By 2017, we will be able to vacation at an orbital hotel. By 2011, robots will take care of our gardens.

These are some of the scenarios developed by British Telecom’s technology foresight team, which also predicts widespread telepathic communications and the transfer of information contained in a human brain to a machine by 2051.

The technological innovations approaching over the next fifty years will transform our lives so profoundly that only a global shift in mindset will allow us to adapt to them.

That is the conclusion of the 2005 BT Technology Timeline, a technology foresight exercise developed by British Telecom experts that anticipates possible innovations in fields as diverse as health, economics, demographics, energy, robotics, space, telecommunications, and transportation.

The authors are careful to explain that the scenarios they present are merely possibilities, as are the likely social implications of such innovations. To create these scenarios, they consulted experts from various disciplines around the world. Together, they formed a consensus on which technologies are most likely to emerge in the coming years, when they may appear in society, and what social impact they might have.

The result is a catalog of roughly one thousand emerging technologies classified by specialty and by the time period in which they are expected to become available to society.

The authors acknowledge that many of these technologies seem like science fiction, but they point to science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke’s Third Law, formulated in 1962: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Nanotechnology and Biotechnology: Key Drivers

The report notes that within 60 years, nanotechnology and biotechnology will have impacts on our lives that today would appear magical, but that will seem completely normal to our grandchildren. This is because our current time scale only allows us to perceive a small portion of what is coming.

Looking first at the more distant technologies, the experts predict that by 2051 the United Kingdom will have a soccer team composed entirely of robots; the hole in the ozone layer will have completely disappeared; telepathic communication will be commonplace; and information stored in a human brain will be transferable to an artificial medium. Artificial brains, they suggest, will exist as early as 2040.

Time travel, first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence, the movement of people through cyberspace, faster-than-light travel, and the collapse of the international economy are all scenarios placed beyond 2050 without any specific date. These are considered the most speculative predictions.

Future and Present

More likely, however, according to the report, is that by 2046 nuclear fusion energy will be well established, by 2041 a small city will exist on the Moon, by 2036 we will have the first space elevator, and by 2031 robots will be smarter than humans.

Other projections include boxing matches between androids by 2026, yogurts equipped with DNA electronic circuits telling jokes by 2021, self-driving cars by 2016, orbital hotels for vacationers by 2017, robot gardeners by 2011, and computers surpassing humans in processing speed as early as the following year.

These examples are only a simplified representation of the technological futures described in the BT report. It also mentions the possibility of video tiles in bathroom walls to entertain children by 2012, and home walls capable of changing appearance to stimulate energy, happiness, or calm.

This was not BT’s first forecasting exercise. A similar study conducted in the 1990s reportedly achieved an accuracy rate between 80% and 90%. In any case, the purpose of such exercises is not simply to predict the future correctly.

The primary objective of foresight studies is to design plausible future scenarios so that these perspectives can help us make better decisions in the present. We must imagine what may happen in the coming years in order to adapt our mindset, profession, or business activity to possible developments. It is one of the best ways to make sense of the present.

Most Notable Scenarios

2006-2010: emotional toys, an artificial intelligence pop group reaches the world’s top ten, Internet-based theater, a supercomputer faster than the human brain, mobile phones that transmit emotions, flexible screens.

2008-2012: medicines delivered through genetically modified fruit, video tattoos, intelligent fabrics that monitor health, telepresence education, holographic advertising, real-time conversation translators.

2011-2015: self-driving cars, dental regeneration through gene therapy, disappearance of paper money, 60% of the world’s population living in cities, insect robots assisting pollination, robot gardeners, automatic street speed control, computers that sleep.

2013-2017: electronic makeup that changes color, robots guiding blind people through city streets, half the world’s population connected to the Internet, nanotechnology toys, holographic videos, orbital hotels, personal genomes integrated into medical records, international recognition of cybernationality.

2016-2020: legal protection for electronic life forms, movie audiences becoming actors within films, electronic objects that control emotions, androids representing 10% of the global population, privatized policing, kaleidoscopic flowers.

2021-2025: instant automatic translation, 3D television, the first bionic Olympics, biochemical storage of solar energy, the first mission to Mars, joke-telling yogurt, noise-canceling garden technology.

2026-2030: 3D printers in homes, the first genetically assembled e-baby, full brain connectivity, bacterial circuits, android sporting competitions, space factories supporting interstellar commerce.

2031-2035: slowing human metabolism to enable long-duration space travel, computers smarter than people, custom-designed pets, games using real genetics, creation of The Matrix.

2036-2040: inauguration of the first space elevator, solar power stations, virtual storefronts, the first mechano-fractal kilometer.

2041-2045: the first lunar city with regular shuttle service, the world population reaches 10 billion, wave energy supplies 50% of the United Kingdom’s energy demand.

2046-2050: a small colony of scientists establishes a self-sufficient city on Mars, artificial brains become reality, fusion energy becomes dominant, minerals are extracted from asteroids.

2051+: thoughts, feelings, and memories are transferred into computers, the ozone hole disappears, life expectancy reaches 100 years, telepathic communication becomes widespread, time travel is achieved, international financial collapse, movement of people through cyberspace.

Other Scenarios

BT’s foresight exercise is not the only one of its kind. Social Technologies also developed an extensive set of scenarios describing what the world might look like in 2025 across fifteen different categories. Its approach is more social than technological, yet equally compelling and rigorous. The work was produced by consulting firm Coates & Jarratt, Inc. Joseph Coates, one of its principal contributors, previously published A Science and Technology Program for the 21st Century.

For an even broader perspective, readers can consult 2100 Scenarios by Thierry Gaudin. Originally published in 1993 as 2100: récit du prochain siècle, this influential work remains relevant today. Gaudin, a member of the Tendencias21 editorial board, later published La Prospective, in which he argues that the transition from an industrial civilization to a knowledge-based civilization fundamentally transforms professions and social activities.

In his vision of the next century, Gaudin describes the likely evolution of human society through the year 2100. The process is characterized by two major stages: an initial period of social deterioration, followed by a positive social response based on large-scale educational programs, urban redesign, and reforestation. According to these scenarios, the 21st century concludes with the predominance of feminine, spiritual, and sensitivity-based values. The work’s greatest strength lies in its breadth of topics, interdisciplinary approach, and the participation of experts from many different cultures.
